Finding accommodation

Depends on which FAU campus you will be attending, either Erlangen or Nuremberg, Fürth can also be an alternative city to visit. Here are some of our recommendation:

Travel Options to Erlangen /Nürnberg / Fürth

  • Albrecht-Dürer-Airport Nürnberg (https://www.airport-nuernberg.de/english) is located between Nuremberg and Erlangen, about 6 km north of Nuremberg’s city centre and central railway station and about 15 km south of Erlangen. Leaving the plane and picking up the luggage can be done within 30 minutes, since it is a small airport with short distances. There are two options to get to Erlangen from the airport:

  • You can use the regional public transports website to inform youabout your best travel connections: https://www.vgn.de/en/
  • Subway line U2 from “Nürnberg Flughafen” in the direction of “Röthenbach”; departure every 10 minutes; journey time 13 minutes; exit at station “Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof”. If you stay in a hotel in Nürnberg, just travel on by other means of transport in the city. (https://www.vgn.de/liniennetze/liniennetz_nuernberg_furth_stein)
  • If your hotel is in Erlangen, at Nuremberg central station choose a R2 train (Regional Express or Regional Bahn) or an S1 train (commuter train) in the direction of “Forchheim”, “Bamberg”, or “Lichtenfels”, “Würzburg”, “Saalfeld”, “Jena”. The journey time is 14 to 25 minutes; exit at “Erlangen Hauptbahnhof”. From there you can travel on by taxi or bus to your hotel (https://www.vgn.de/liniennetze/stadtverkehr_erlangen_stilisiert/). Most busses leave right in front of the train station or around the neighbouring Hugenottenkirche (you can see the tower of the church from the train station)

  • Bus No. 30 in the direction of “Erlangen Arcaden”; departs every 20 minutes from the airport; journey time 35 minutes, exit at “Erlangen Arcaden”

  • If you stay in Fürth,
  • Bus No. 33 from the airport of Nürnberg and get off either at “Rathaus” or the final stop “Hauptbahnhof”. Journey time 30 minutes.
  • You can use subway Line U2, get off at “Plärrer” and change here to subway line U1 to Fürth. It takes about 30 minutes.
  • You can use subway Line U2, get off at “Hauptbahnhof” and change here to a regional train to Fürth (see description for Erlangen). It takes about 20-30 minutes
  • If you come from Frankfurt Airport, you leave the IC/E train in Würzburg and then travel to Fürth either by IC train or RE train and get off at “Hauptbahnhof”.

Tickets for local public transportation

Tickets for subways or trains must be bought prior to entering the means of transport:

Fares depend on the travel distance (please refer to the links above for current fares):

  • Within Nuremberg or between Nuremberg and Fürth: price level A
  • Within Erlangen: price level C
  • From Nuremberg to Erlangen (and vice versa): price level 4
  • Tickets are valid for one journey, one direction
  • It is possible to buy a day ticket (https://www.vgn.de/en/tickets/all-day-ticket- solo/) valid for all means of local transport

If you stay in a hotel in Nuremberg and have to travel to Erlangen almost every day, we recommend to buy a 7-day MobiCard: https://www.vgn.de/tickets/7-tage-mobicard/ (price level/travel zone 4). You can use the MobiCard for regional transport such as subways, trams, buses, S-trains, and R-trains (NOT for long distance services like ICEs and ICs) in Nuremberg, Fürth, and Erlangen. Please note that a zone card is required, so you have to buy the ticket in person at one of VGN’s sales points: https://www.vgn.de/en/service/sales-points/

Here, you can find an overview over the different types of tickets available: https://www.vgn.de/en/tickets/
